Work Underway On Newell Highway Blackspots

Work is now underway on safety upgrades totalling $1.2 million at four high risk intersections on the Newell Highway between Narrandera and West Wylong, with funding coming from the Rudd Labor Government's Economic Stimulus Plan.

Work is now underway on the following projects:

  • Intersection of Newell Highway and Gawnes Road at Grong Grong: $300,000 to upgrade intersection to increase room for left and right turns.

  • Intersection of Newell Highway and Murrell Creek Road at Ardlethan: $300,000 to upgrade intersection to increase room for left and right turns.

  • Intersection of Newell Highway and Bartels Lane at Alleena: $300,000 to upgrade intersection to increase room for left and right turns.

  • Intersection of Newell Highway and Storms Lane at Alleena: $300,000 to upgrade intersection to increase room for left and right turns.

These projects were recommended by a panel of independent road safety experts.

The Black Spot program has a proven track record of saving lives with an evaluation showing that it prevented at least 32 fatalities and more than 1,500 serious injuries in its first three years.

Not only have we honoured our election commitment to increase on-going black spot funding by 33 per cent, but we've also provided significant additional funding under our Economic Stimulus Plan.
